You will laugh

A while back we discovered that I have the same shade of hair as Danny, and Nessa has the same as Matt, and Jo has the same as Jack. So what did we do about it? Naturally.....

THIS.

A discovery

Upon my 24th birthday, Danny purchased for me what is now my very favorite belonging- red slipper boots. They have increased the quality of my lifestyle by 76% at least.
Here they are documented. (One of Danny's favorite past times is to take pictures of me when I've fallen asleep in strange ways on the couch. This is the only picture of said boots.)

As I was perusing pictures of olden times today, what did I find? Me as a 5-year old sporting pink slipper boots. Who knew that the 80s provided such luxury footwear. I guess the slipper boot will have to be a lifetime tradition.

Blog thoughts

This is probably going to be long.

If you feel inclined to read it, I've provided three lovely songs on the bottom of this page to enhance your reading experience.

Lately I've struggled with the concept of the blog. What exactly is the purpose? For some people it is a daily routine log. For others it is a photo archive. For many it is a baby journal or a craft file or adventure log or a way to connect with long-distance relatives. Danny likes to tell me about the societal implications of the blog world, and the sheer precociousness of the so-called "me" generation in thinking that their thoughts and daily lives are so important that the masses want to read them on the world wide web. I can't refute that. He's also quick to point out the merits of the blog as he loves to read old posts and look at pictures. My mother once referred to the blog as a "marketing technique" when I was single. I often think about how I'd love to have a file of entries from my mom when she was my age, with descriptions in her own words of things she liked, did, and thought. When I'm 60, I want to know what I was thinking when I was 24, and maybe my kids will too. Perhaps there is a better method for tracking that than a blogspot. Perhaps not.

Mine doesn't seem to have a theme. If it did, if would have to be the use of parenthetical side notes. (I love to use parenthesis, have you noticed?) But I like for things to have themes- meals, parties, phases of life even. Not long ago we had a coconut dinner, and 2010 is the year of the campout, and I have yet to think of a theme for Nessa's baby shower. Any ideas?

In ye olden days when I used to be diligent and consistent in my blogging efforts, I was able to come up with concise entries involving funny stories, a single photograph, or important news. These days I seem to only come up with bullet lists of recent happenings. Boooring.

Not that the funny stories are in short supply. Since becoming the caretaker of Miss Wilma, I've plenty of those to share, but it would be impolite and disrespectful of me to do so considering I love her, and according to her latest introduction of me to a ward member, I am her best friend. And BFFs don't tell stories about each other's weaknesses, even if they are hilarious. Danny is only slightly perturbed that he's been dethroned by an 83-year old as official BFF. What can I say? I spend more time with Wilma. (I'm kidding of course, I didn't have the heart to tell Wilma that I already have a BFF.)

Photographs, on the other hand, are hard to come by these days. Does anyone have pictures of Danny and I since we got married? Because we sure don't. A worthy goal for 2010.

I have found that the things I'm generally inclined to post fall into three basic categories:

1. Methods to make life more delicious and/or efficient that I'm just dying to share. I find great pleasure in sharing a good thing. The other day when Macey's was having the most amazing Quaker cereal sale imaginable, I called both of my sisters at work and left them messages on voicemail encouraging them to take advantage of it. I also told the girls that I visit teach, in case they were in dire need of cheap cereal. I was apparently so enthusiastic and convincing that Ness said I should volunteer to do an ad for them giving the very same speech and biting sassily into a spoonful of Peanut Butter Crunch. For days I've been itching to post the following-- next time you're out of ideas for dinner, put a can of tomato soup on the stove, add a scoop of pesto, a bit of cream, mix it up and serve it with good bread and presto! Heavenly! Divine! (As a side note, number 5 on the list of the best things I ever did in 2009 was make a huge batch of pesto and freeze it in ice cube trays for easy access. Very good things come of this. When springtime comes around, plant a basil seed. You won't regret it.)

2. Funny quirks from daily living. For example, recently in our family I have been given the honorable task of officially presiding over family lint rolling time before church, family stretch time after running, and family menu planning time. (Danny doesn't know that I preside over that one yet, I came up with it while he was at work.) He of course presides over family scripture reading, family prayer, and family post-prayer smooch. Ha.

3. Hmm, I thought there were 3. The only other thing I can think of is bullet lists, another personal favorite. That being said, and without resolving the matter that I set out to fix, I end with the following:

  • Randy turned 59 and we partied. What an adorable, kind, steady man.
  • It absolutely refuses to snow around here.
  • My daily nutritional intake revolves mostly around Peanut Butter Crunch.
  • I started going to the gym with Danny (more on that later).
  • Nephew Paul was baptized this morning and it was a very sweet occasion.

That's all for now. Happy blogging all.

A Party!

I sent out e-invites for this, but some of them bounced back. Spread the word to the Hawkins and Leavitt clans, and all lovers of Vanessa.

Good Monday

Exercised, took care of Wilma, ate Coconut Chicken Curry (thanks Becky, like a year ago) hosted FHE (welcome Dani and Jeff!), learned about Job, won Cranium, house is clean, homework done (Danny's), happy girl.

Don't you love the simplicity of January?
